The National LGBTQ Legacy Giving Initiative was created by movement leaders, activists, and people with special expertise. The Initiative is committed to ensuring LGBTQ+ organizations can continue the critical work and services they provide to our community.
For far too long, organizations have been focused on simply maintaining their work and securing funding for the here and now. It is imperative that we focus on long-term funding strategies so we can equip ourselves to both tackle future challenges and to take advantage of new opportunities to best serve the LGBTQ+ community. A key component of this long-term funding is helping supporters invest through legacy giving (also known as “planned giving”).
Legacy giving is a commitment to leave a gift to an organization through a person’s will or estate plans. It’s also one of the most impactful ways that individuals can give back to the organizations they care about by helping to ensure they can sustain operations and services even after their passing. Most people have the capacity to make a meaningful gift, whether through cash, stocks, retirement accounts, real estate, or life insurance gifts.
Securing legacy giving commitments can be woven into the fundraising work that organizations are already doing. Moreover, by providing this opportunity to supporters, groups can create a culture of giving to benefit and protect future generations.
The opportunity in LGBTQ legacy giving.
Our movement—and communities across the country—have an unequaled opportunity in legacy giving. This opportunity has been noted throughout the U.S. non-profit world, especially by universities, large cultural institutions, and other well-funded entities, which are pouring millions of dollars into developing legacy gifts.
The National LGBTQ Legacy Giving Initiative believes that most—if not all—LGBTQ organizations can benefit from legacy giving. We understand that most of our organizations don’t have a lot of time or resources to devote to legacy giving. As noted in the FAQs, even some simple steps can position your organization better to receive bequests and other gifts.
You’ll find here some information, tools, and templates that can help you set up a legacy giving program. If your organization already has legacy giving effort in place, we hope these resources might help build your program still further. We are always open to suggestions about other resources that LGBTQ organizations would find helpful, and please feel free to share your ideas and thoughts.
