Why this project?
The National Task Force on LGBTQ Planned Giving Project Report demonstrated the historical opportunity available—but awareness and urgency by donors and professional advisors are lacking. The Stonewall Legacy Project was created to help you take action and to empower the LGBTQ+ community for the future.
The top reasons for leaving legacy gifts are passion, impact, and a desire to give back. However, conversations with advisors are often mired in technical jargon or tax code. As such, it’s critical to train advisors to speak fluently about the “why” and offer tools and techniques to educate and inform clients on the impact they can have on LGBTQ+ groups. Research and experience have shown that having these informative conversations with LGBTQ individuals is good for your business, building lasting client relationships and establishing your practice as one that community members can trust.
We are working with and helping train professionals like you to have these conversations with your clients. Whether you’re an attorney, financial advisor, wealth manager, accountant, or someone who assists in estate planning, our goal is to help you become an advocate and champion of this moment. By providing you with the skills to have conversations that are more statistically likely to generate philanthropic gifts, we can all help secure the future for the LGBTQ+ community.
Here’s a simple example:
An advisor saying: “There may be some tax advantages to your making some kind of gift to charity. Are you interested?”
Will likely generate a different result than:
An advisor learns of a client’s interest in LGBTQ+ youth homelessness, and asks “If we can take care of the people you love and also structure a gift that addresses LGBTQ+ youth homelessness, is that something you’d like to do?”
The Ask
We are asking professionals who advise clients on their estate planning to commit to:
- Raising the possibility of leaving a charitable gift with each of their clients
- Developing expertise and comfort in having conversations in ways proven to be more likely to result in a gift.
- Maintaining awareness of organizations serving the LGBTQ+ community locally and nationally
- Given the urgency of this moment, sharing with clients and friends the singular opportunity that the current generational transfer of wealth can provide to protect the LGBTQ+ community.
Upcoming Events and Trainings
The Stonewall Legacy Project training is a 60-minute program to help estate professionals to facilitate discussions with LGBTQ+ clients on the opportunity of leaving a legacy gift to the community in their estate planning. All sessions offer insight on incredible potential of the anticipated LGBTQ+ wealth transfer, the nature of conversations that lead to legacy gifts, and a review of why the Canons of Ethics—and good business practices—support these conversations with clients. Sessions are eligible for Continuing Education Credits depending on local requirements.
If you would like to host a session in your community, please contact us to discuss options.
